Staff Engineer, Renewable

Job Description

Job Title: Staff Engineer, Renewable Electrical Engineering. Location: Chicago, IL. This role focuses on electrical engineering & construction for cutting-edge renewable energy projects. You will manage conceptual project designs and oversee engineering firms to complete detailed designs for projects involving inverter-based wind and solar generators, with complex electrical systems.

Responsibilities:  

  • Develop conceptual designs that comply with owner & interconnection requirements.  
  • Conduct design reviews of electrical drawings (DC solar, AC collection systems, substations, transmission lines).  
  • Define scope for electrical system studies & review results for accuracy.  
  • Track design schedules, update stakeholders, & ensure timely completion of engineering tasks.  
  • Support project closeout by organizing and transferring all as-built documentation.
  • Review competitive bids for electrical materials and manage suppliers during engineering & commissioning.  
  • Monitor construction progress through remote oversight and on-site inspections.  
  • Attend on-site meetings with contractors and utilities for coordination.  
  • Perform factory inspections & witness acceptance testing for major materials.
  • Assist in developing project-specific construction and engineering specifications.  
  • Prepare and validate electrical energy calculations.  
  • Coordinate with independent engineers to navigate technical due diligence.  
  • Analyze conceptual designs for new projects.  
  • Collaborate with operations engineering to incorporate lessons learned into future designs.  
  • Stay updated on industry technology through training and conferences.

Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field, or expected graduation by Summer 2025.  
  • Knowledge of power systems gained through coursework & internships.  
  • Basic understanding of HV/MV electrical infrastructure (substations, distribution systems).  
  • General knowledge of electrical industry standards & codes.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, & Visio.  
  • Some travel required (up to 25%).  
  • Valid driver’s license.  
  • Eligible to work in the U.S. without employer visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Passing the FE exam.  
  • Experience in renewable energy & infrastructure construction.  
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently across various teams.
